- PLUNDER
- A Game of Archaeology and Greed
-
- by Steve Herring (c)1991
-
-
- BACKGROUND
-
- You are a greedy archaeologist who has come into possession of the
- maps of ten ancient places showing the location of long lost treasures.
- You realize that you can use your skills an an archaeologist to find
- the treasures, become rich, and quit your job teaching at the University
- where no one appreciates you.
-
- All of these places have vanished from the face of the earth after
- centuries of abuse by man and the elements. But pieces of foundation
- and other ruins remain buried under several feet of soil. With the
- maps are directions for finding the ruins, but the reference points
- they use are long gone, so you have only a general idea of their
- location. Your expeditions to these sites have two phases: First you
- must locate the ruins within a larger area. Then you must find the
- treasure, which is buried deeper, in or near the ruins.
-
- Ten expeditions are arranged in order of difficulty. When you find the
- treasure from one you are ready to proceed to the next. You start with
- $25,000 funding from the University. You will need much more to
- complete your mission, so each treasure you find is used to help fund
- the next expedition. If you spend too much on digging "dry" holes, your
- money may run out. So careful archaeological planning (and a little luck)
- is needed if you want to get rich!
-
- REQUIREMENTS
-
- Herringbone Software products are designed to be enjoyed in the most
- basic environments. Using ASCII graphic symbols, it is not necessary
- to have a graphics video card or monitor. Color is used, but the
- software will work in a mono display. The programs may be run from a
- floppy disk but will run smoother if loaded to a hard disk.
-
- Plunder uses a set of "data" files, so if a hard disk is used, it is
- important to keep them all in one directory. The program will fail if it
- cannot find all the files:
-
- PLUND.EXE PLUND.S1 PLUND.S4 PLUND.S7 PLUND.S10
- PLUND.DOC PLUND.S2 PLUND.S5 PLUND.S8 PLUND.TOP
- PLUND.SCR PLUND.S3 PLUND.S6 PLUND.S9
-
- To start the program change to the drive or directory where these files
- reside, enter PLUND and press ENTER (RETURN).
-
-
- GAME INSTRUCTIONS
-
- 1. The window in the center of the screen shows an area 168' across by 78',
- or about a third of an acre. The total area that you can explore is 252'
- across by 198' (1.15 acres).
-
- 2. Each expedition starts with you (symbol +) at the northwest (upper-
- left) corner of the area to be explored. This is next to the "datum
- point" (small triangle), a permanent reference point used by
- archaeologists as the base point for all measurements. The CURRENT
- LOCATION box shows your distance from this point at all times to help
- orient you when you are well within the exploration area.
-
- 3. Use the arrow keys to move within the exploration area.
-
- 4. At any point you may order a "dig". Your options are shown on the left
- side of the screen. It costs you $2 per square foot to dig.
-
- Press S to dig a SQUARE A square is an area up to 21' by 18'
- A full square costs $756 to dig
-
- Press T to dig a TRENCH A trench is a horizontal area 6' by
- up to 81' long
- A full trench costs $972 to dig
-
- Press P to dig a PIT A pit is a single screen block
- representing 3' by 6'
- Cost is $36
-
- NOTE: As your screen symbol takes up the same space, you
- cannot see what is in a pit until you move off that space.
-
- 5. When you order a dig with the SQUARE or TRENCH commands, only those
- screen blocks that have not already been excavated and are within the
- exploratrion area will be cleared and charged to you. Clever use of
- this fact will give you techniques for efficient digging.
-
- 6. PIT may be used to dig within excavated areas not covered by ruins to
- help you find the treasure. When you dig a PIT in an excavated area,
- a small pit hole (o) is left. The cost is the same as digging a pit
- in an unexcavated area, $36.
-
- 7. The MAP in the lower left corner is a simple plan or layout of the
- building you are searching for. It will not help you find the building,
- but should help you find the treasure (marked with "x"). Use the PIT
- option in the approximate area in the actual ruins that you have
- uncovered. THE LOCATION ON THE MAP MAY NOT BE PRECISE. You may need to
- dig a few holes in the vicinity of the "x" before you find it.
-
- 8. When you hit the treasure you are told what it is and what its
- appraised value is (the value will vary from game to game due to market
- conditions). Press RETURN (or ENTER) to go on to the next expedition.
- The value of the treasure is added to your funding.
-
- 9. The same process is used until you either complete all ten expeditions
- or run out of money. Each of the first nine treasures is worth between
- $5,000 and $10,000, and the tenth, The Golden Shield of Hercules, is
- worth over $200,000.
-
- 10. If you go bankrupt there is an option to start over. Whenever you start
- over or start a new game, the location of the building in the
- exploration area and the location of the treasure in or near the
- building will be different.

- OBLIGATORY STERN REMARKS and HUMILIATING PLEA FOR MONEY
-
- PLUNDER is shareware. It may be freely copied and distributed as long as
- all files in the set listed above are included. As shareware it is intended
- to be used only for evaluation. If you like it, and would like to continue
- playing it without that nagging feeling of guilt, simply register yourself
- as a user by sending a measly $6 to the author who will send you a secret
- command for jumping directly to any of the ten sites.
